Dolich PastorDear Neighbors: Several years ago, a team of Allentown pastors from different churches and different denominations began to get together out of a common concern for the community. Alarmed by the changes in their city increased signs of gang activity, drug dealing, deteriorating housing, the decline in jobs, the total disregard of rules and regulations, the lack of civility, just to name a few- these pastors began to consider how churches might be more effective in addressing community concerns. The pastors clearly recognized that organized faith communities, like St. Joseph's Lutheran Church, were responding to the needs in our city with an array of critically needed programs. The family center is a vital and essential part in this our community. Its leaders have been busy creating programs to help the needy and to look for a way to improved our community. Together with the family center, I am asking you to consider the issues that may be plaguing this neighborhood, and then consider offering a small amount of time in your already busy schedule and come together as concerned neighbors and citizens in this community. I am asking you to consider helping leaders at St. Joseph's Lutheran Church by volunteering to help with CUNA. What is CUNA? CUNA (Churches United for Neighborhood Action) is an organization established to serve as a resource to pastors, churches and residents to help congregations in Allentown push for the needed changes in our community. Over the past 3 years, CUNA has begun the organizing process in 7 different congregations. CUNA has partnered with St. Joseph's Lutheran Church in order to work in this community. We are looking for people, concerned people, to identify, research and address priority issues through local community action; these issues will then be presented to the respective city authorities in order to ask for action and changes. We cannot do this alone. I know in my heart that if we work together, we can make a difference in people and in the community, just look at what the family center has accomplished. If you are interested in hearing more about faith-based community organizing, please contact me at St. Joseph's Lutheran Church at 610-432-0344. Let us improve the quality of life in our community! Thank You, |
